Talk about touchy..... as you say it is a request not a demand. Jack Straw has his rights as do the Muslims, if he prefers to see his constituents without a full veil then he should be able to do so, especially as the Muslim women can still maintain their decency within the eyes of Allah by wearing a veil. I must confess though to not expecting a great surge of Muslim women going to see their MP anyway as wouldn't those who advocate the full veil at all times (i.e. the fundamentalist and radical men) see this as 'Men's business' and beneath a woman? This is the UK. People from any ethnic, social or religious background MUST make the effort to ADAPT to the host nation and its ways, not the other way around. Consequences of this are alienation from within and not from the white English christian society as large. The normal every day Muslims we all know and like need to take control of these radicals or at least let us know how to do it otherwise we're going to go further away from harmonisation and more towards segregation and more violence, bombings and hate. To all English people regardless of who you are, who you worship or where you come from, stop sitting on the fence and make your voice heard to stop this radicalisation.

I have no objection to Muslim Veils. But someone with hearing difficulties or who have to lip read could with the full face veil. I think that only makes sense. Though not saying I agree with JS.
I am white middle class as I have been put into a class, but at the end of the day i am my own person and have my own thoughts

I can't answer you question directly - but I can vouch for the possibility that Jack Straw (for once perhaps) is actually telling the truth as I too have suffered similarly all my life - have had a number of hearing tests which all confirm there is an aural defect, but none can detect exactly what it is.... I can say that because of it, depending on the tone of a person's voice, I often can't hear exactly what they're saying unless I can link it up to their mouth movement - otherwise it's a non-specific speach 'noise' is all I can describe it as - I can hear you're saying something but I can't make out what......

My understanding was that Straw felt more comfortable being able to see the faces of his constituents when having one-on-one talks. He therefore ASKED if they would mind removing any face-veils during the meetings, but accepted their answer even if it was "no". Not being able to see a face makes us feel uneasy in Western countries, and it made Straw uneasy, but we need to understand that not everyone in the world thinks as we do.

I understand that children seeing the veiled people, are frightened. I do not blame them I am as well. Not knowing who is hiding behind this covering is not acceptable in the west. Most countries have found it necessary to outlaw it for safety reasons. Islam is about peace , why the need to cover and hide the face? I do not understand how that benefits Peace?

Straw never actually told anyone to remove their veils, but actually asked if they would mind removing their veils, the choice was actually up to the woman. As a Blackburn resident it shames me that many people from my town (both sides of the community) are intent on staring up racial tensions.

Jack Straw said he only asked or preferred women to remove their veils when talking to him. He never said they had to. As usual, it was the muslims getting all hot headed and over reacting, as they always do.

My boyfriend is deaf in one ear and has limited hearing in the other and he has to be able to watch my lips when I speak. Have you ever tried talking to a deaf person by covering your mouth? If I have my back turned to my boyfriend he can not understand what I am saying even with his good ear.
