Most of problems stem from the mess the British Empire left behind before it limped off to die for example India and Pakistan, Israel and there near neighbours. Also the Catastrophic implosion of the French Empire during the 50's and 60's, With most of North West Africa, and parts of South East Asia turning into a bloody mess. Which America tried to solve and failed.
Though if want something more specific, try the treaty of Versailles, the fate of all the horrors we have known for almost a century all started there, the details are all outlined beautifully in the book "Paris 1919" well worth a read.

I would say "Hitler-like" thinking is a root cause. Read "Because they Hate" by Brigette Gabriel. It's a huge wake up call for Americans.
