The Chinese American know their ABC and the Japanese American only know their AB and then jump to J. Hah..hhah..sorry can't help it.
Seriously, in persuit of education, both minorities are considered equal. Coming from an Asian decent, most of the Chinese and Japanese parents empasize strongly in education at early age. The significant similarities in my opinion are the up bringing and this is true to other Asian group.

one slightly noticable diffrence is the slight color tone of the japanese as if they were in the sun just a few seconds longer than the chinese. also if you look closely the japanese tend to decorate in more of a red and white patriotic fasion

The only similarity I see is that both are Americans. Let's not be so divisive, okay? America is supposed to be a 'melting pot', not a bowl of lumpy oatmeal!

Probably the same as the similarities between those two ethnic groups and all the other ethnic groups. You can't effectively compare ethnic groups as a whole. Only individuals from those groups. Why would you try?

Chinese Americans eyes slant at a 4 degree angle.
Japanese Americans eyes slant at a 3 1/2 degree angle.

And 'regular' Americans group them typically as 'oriental'
