for a healthy person shingles are not fatal, they just make you wish you were dead because they are extraordinarily painful in many cases. A diabetic on the other hand, is at very high risk from any infection because they can't fight off the infection, they become septic and die. Your friend is in the ICU and getting the best care possible, but even then it may not be enough. Pray hard for her, she may pull thru.

Shingles can be fatal depending on which nerves are attacked. If her breathing is compromised then it may be the nerves that control breathing. Likely they will put her on a respirator and load her with anti-viral drugs. Hopefully she's had problems breathing because of pain.
A friend of mine had shingles attack the nerves in her skull. No outward sores but one-side of her face was paralysed like she had had a stroke. Shingles can cause paralyses of muscle and it can be a long time to return to normal if ever. My friend is nearly 2 years and still badly affected.

Prayers for your friend and you.

The shingles would not be life threatening. Now her diabetes may be out of control---that would certainly put her in danger. Shingles is very painful.
They should put her on Lyrica. That is a medication for nerve pain (and other conditions). It is given to diabetics for neuropathy pain.
