I'm living in a homeless shelter where they won't let me work. What should I do? Is there any way I can do a job for pay without being employed? Please don't say hooker or prostitute. I mean LEGIT jobs, like babysitting or something. I have my college degree, & now I'm homeless & am not allowed to work. I have debts & student loans to pay off. How can I work around this situation? I mean, if you put yourself in my shoes, would you work as employed anyway?

Hmmm, this strikes me as strange. Why won't they let you work, considering that their goal should be to got you OFF the homeless list. If they won't let you work, how can you ever get past the "homeless" stage in your life? How could they possibly help anyone "better" themselves, and make room for new "clients". Is this shelter funded based on the number of people that stay, and they have available bed space?

I would go out, seek and accept employment. There are many caring people in the world that can and will help you. Once you accept employment and take a leap of faith, who knows what doors will open for you.

Don't let this homeless shelter become an albatross around your neck. Good Luck.

Babysitting. They pay you cash and you don't have to report the income. That way, the shelter won't have any claim on what you're doing. Just don't do any professional babysitting that requires filling out tax forms. Earning cash for babysitting won't pay much, but at least you'll have SOME of your own money.

You're smart to ask about this. It's never good to be financially dependent on anyone else.

Find a live-in situation as a counselor at a rehab clinic or as anything anywhere.

Evidently their funding keeps flowing as long as you are dependent upon them.

Go to a true Christian church and talk to a pastor about it, it could be they have an avenue for you there.

Do anything short of being illegal, immoral or fattening to get out of that liberal holdover from the Johnson administration.

Why will a homeless shelter not let you work? Or is it that they will charge you rent to stay there? Anywhere you stay will charge you.

Waitressing at pizza shop is good, or try some sort of temp work...
