Written language similarities. Kanji in Japan came from Chinese characters. The meanings for Chinese characters and Kanji differ. The Japanese have created 2 other forms of writing (Hiragana and Katakana) but Kanji still remains a similarity between the Chinese and the Japanese.

I work with a Japanese guy, he said they are not alike in any way. I've heard him call Chinese people bad names. I don't think they get along.

They are both Asian cultures, and at one point in time, the Japanese were originally from China. (That was a LONG time ago.) Their written language looks similar and their spoken language comes from the same language family. (It's easier for a native Japanese speaker to learn Chinese than it would be to learn Spanish, for instance. Similar grammatical rules and all that.) Both are very family and society oriented cultures. (ie, society is more important than the individual)

They're not alike. This is like asking how are white people and mexicans alike.
There are so many similarities and differences. It's just safe to say that they are similar when an ignorant person MAKES them similar. but truly, they have different histories, different cultures, different societies.
there is no way to answer this question. LET'S THINK FOR OURSELVES, PEOPLE!

The matriculation examinations are both tough, competitive, and similar in passing ratio.
It is because both countries are over populated, and they valued college education.
