White people in America go different ways about this. Some of them believe (wrongly IMO) that "white" is a discrete category, and that things like "Irish" and "German" or whatever don't really matter. Some white people see "whiteness" as being equivalent to "mainstream" "boring" or "standard" and prefer to identify as something more specific - in the US, where most white people are mixtures of various European and Eurasian ethnicities, people get a lot of identities to choose from! Other white people, perhaps by virtue of being the offspring of recent immigrants, don't see "white" as being a discrete category and feel closer to, say, Irish people than they do to "white" people as a whole.

People are interested in their ancestry and geneology. My mother's family came from the Pomeranian region of Germany, so I'm half German, and my father's family came to American in the 1850's from Bohemia (later part of Czechoslovakia and now called the Czech Republic) to farm. All of America is populated by immigrants, then and now. The only natives are the Native Americans.

But although we may call ourselves half this and part that, we're Americans. America started out being the great melting pot, although I don't know what you'd call it now.

I agree, we are all immigrants and we are all mixed and related depending on how far back you want to go. I find it irritating that some people identify themselves with thier race. Usually I just think "so what". I never say I am proud to be white. That would be like saying I am proud to have light brown hair. I didn't do much to achieve that hair color.

Cherish the diversity and customs as long as they don't attempt to usurp American culture and customs. We should consider ourselves Americans first, and our individual backgrounds should just add an interesting flavor, not take over the dish.

I really haven't heard a Yankee say such a thing....

But a few Mets and Red Sox players most likely have said such things.

As he receives older he will probable locate it extra handy to call himself "white" or "Mexican." that's although he's delicate figuring out himself with. American lifestyle would not rather settle for the concept of somebody being the two "white" and "Mexican."
