Fescue should do OK if you reseed now. There are many varieties of fescue. Check with your local garden center to see which variety best fits your situation.

I live just over the border in Virginia, near Potomac MD.

The crabgrass should die on its own - it's an annual and can't survive the winter. Run an aerator over the yard if you can. That'll help break up the clay soil we have in this area. Put down some gypsum too. Reseed now (it's a bit late, but you should be OK.)

In the spring, put down the Pre-emergent Crabgrass treatment. It stops the Crabgrass seeds from sprouting. It works for 120 days, supposedly. Actually, it stops ALL seeds from sprouting, so don't waste grass seed on the lawn after you've treated for crabgrass. The seeds will just rot.

Good luck - this was a bad year around here for crabgrass. Oy!

Rake up these spots. Get rid of any dead grass. Spread seed. Cover with straw. And water. This is the best time to sow grass. Warm days, cool nights. Just like spring. Grass has no problem growing in the spring. Don't mow until 2 weeks after you see 1st sprouts. water daily in early morn for 1st week. Don't fertilize until next late May- early June

Latest would be end of Sept. Best is End of Aug to MID SEPT.

You could try it now but chances are slim they would survive the winter months.
