not a fair question. it all depends on the style you're looking for. in my opinion.
Funk- Les Claypool and Flea
Metal- Ryan Martinie and Cliff Burton (not just cuz he's from metallica, i dont like metallica all that much but he was pretty good.)
Rock- Geezer Butler and Tony Levin
Other- Jaco Pastorius (probably could be top 3) Geddy Lee, Victor Wooten, Jack Bruce, James Jamerson, John Wetton, Chris Squire, Felix Pappalardi, Anthony Jackson, Roger Glover, Stanley Clarke, Dave Larue, Art Mauney, James Dewar, and Tim Bogert

Tony Butler from Big Country is up there (listen to Bass Dance), and Paul Simonon from the Clash. Flea and Getty Lee, for sure.

Michael Anthony is a luckier b@st@rd even than Ringo Starr. And the bass lines in Pink Floyd are so easy my gramma could do em. Floyd's songs sound good, sure, but the bass lines are simplistic.

Everyone has thair own style preferences, but Victor Wooten is the best technical bass player - BAR NONE. The only reason that you can believe that what he's doing is possible because you are watching it. I also love Stanley Clarke.

I like Tony Levin.

He's the bass-guitar for Peter Gabriel and he has his own band that does a lot of really good instrumental.

Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy, or John Deacon from Queen are my favorites, but I also really like Jack Bruce from Cream & Dee-dee Ramone.

Paul McCartney & Flea from RHCP are pretty talented as well, too.

Lemmy from Motorhead & Tom Peterson from Cheap Trick also kick SERIOUS ***.

Oh, & I almost forgot Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, what's rock without the Zep, man?
