Both of your statements are true.
Iraq was not responsible for the 9/11 attacks.
After 9/11, though, many people asked why Bush did not "connect the dots." The way in which 9/11 is relevant, is that afterwards people had a new appreciation of the danger of a domestic attack by terrorists. There was already a long history with Iraq of war, cease-fire violations, non-cooperations with inspections, etc. I'd say that was a pretty big "dot" to look at.
In short, one of the reasons we are in Iraq IS because of 9/11 - because we became much more aggressive in looking out for potential threats and dealing with them.
It's like when one plane crashes, they look at similar parts on all of the planes of the same model (and even different models) to make sure they are safe. In no way can a defective part on a plane that already crashed affect any other plane, but now that people are focused on that potential danger they want to be sure it doesn't happen again.
That's an extreme example. The Iraq war may have been a mistake, Bush may have misstated or overstated the case, and there were those who were advocating regime change even before 9/11 (it was, after all, OFFICIAL US policy since 1988). We can argue all those things.
But that's why people bring it up. Not because they say Iraq caused it.
PS Here is Iraq War resolution - interesting reading:

Afghanistan was about 9 11 Iraq was about Saddam developing nuclear capabilities and the un not doing anything about it. When we announced we were going to inspect Iraq the russians helped move everything to syria. When we removed saddam the al queda moved in. We didn't know it , but saddam was the only person capable of controlling al queda.

You are right, they did not have anything to do with each other. But it is like a untrue rumor that is told and then spread. Once told, nothing can stop it. Some people are not smart enough to see that they have been lied to, or they just do not want to believe that their government could lie to them.
I had an argument with my dad once, he was a career navy, about the President. I stated that I was going to write a letter to him and let him know just what I though (I was 18 at the time). He informed me that I could not do that because he was the Commander in Chief. I argued that he was an elected official and as a voter I had every right to express myself. I still believe this way today and I will raise my children to think the independently. Question what you hear, it might just ring a little off center.

Once you have been con into believing something, its extremely hard to confess to yourself and others that you were wrong. Too many people in this country; went along to get along. They in essence were too scared of being called unpatriotic for not supporting the War on Iraq. Our adjective was to seek out Bin Laden and his supports on the 9/11 attack. Iraq had nothing to do with it whatsoever. In fact President Bush, knew it from his own staff members. But insisted on finding something out of nothing as a reason. Now the situation has been escalated to highly out of control. Yes I know some dumb neocon, will "Thumbs Down", me for my reports. However; think beyond party loyalty and understand what it is to love America; and the US Constitution; and abuse of power. Going to Iraq hasn't made life better for anyone in America, other than the selected few; stuffing themselves with the missing 9 Billion dollars!

We are in Iraq.Your party is not in power. And we will not leave until Iraq is stable. And finally whats done is done. You Libs keep rehashing the same statements over and over and over and over again. Move on to a new topic. How about lower gas prices. Lower unemployment. And work with us Conservatives and lets send a joined message that Illegal Immigration is the most important issue there is . By voting out everyone who backs amnesty. I know That's against a lot of Conservatives. So what .

True, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, but Bush claimed they did and they had WMD's so they needed to be disarmed.
Bush said (I'm paraphrasing): Saddam has WMD's, he needs to be disarmed, if he doesn't disarm, we'll do it by force. No room for diplomacy.
Mind you, we find out later Saddam had no WMD's. And even more recently we found out Saddam considered Bin Laden a threat to his regime and was never an ally with him. Oh, and never mind the fact Iraq is much worse now that Saddam is gone, and is now a breeding ground for terrorists.

Yes, one does not have anything to do with the other but they do have one common entity...terrorism. Bush had to drag Iraq into the mix because he had to do what his daddy couldn't. He wanted to make his daddy proud of him. He just had to figure out a way to get Saddam Hussein out of there and this is the only way he knew to do it.

Good question. The lefties keep stating that conservatives and Bush supporters believe they're related, but that has never been true.
One would have thought this nonsense would have finally stopped.

It's funny, just when it seem like you are getting through to them and they understand the two are unrelated, they say something like "well what are we supposed to do sit back and do nothing when they kill 3000 of our own people?" Then you just hit youself in the head and say "I give up."
