You need to get a wireless router and have him route the internet connection through that.

You can buy a wireless router (not to be confused with a wireless modem, although this would work its harder to set up). The wireless router simply plugs into the existing modem with a cable out to your flatmates computer but also sends a wifi signal to your laptop.

Wireless router. Modem gets hooked straight into the router and from the router to his computer.

You should be able to pick up the internet from the router as well.
Make sure your wireless network card is enabled.r

Right click on MY Computer....check properties. Go into Hardware tab and then into Device Manager. Look under Network Adapters and make sure its listed and enabled.

You would have to add a wireless router to his Broadband modem. This is the only way unless his broadband modem is a 2wire then it should have built in wireless. I can help you enable that is it is a 2wire.
