Why do Republicians believe in spreading democracy in a part of the world were a MAJORITY want fundamentalism and sharia (rule by islamic law). Iran's president (the guy wanting nukes) was democratically elected, while most of our moderate allies are non democratically elected.

If Lebanon, Egypt, Pakistan, etc, etc held democratic elections, the fundamentalists would win by a WIDE margin.

Democracy, by its very nature, cannot be pushed upon a nation. It will eventually revert to the original form of government.

Spreading democracy (at the point of a gun) was just a cover for the imperialist ambitions of the neo cons. Privatize the oil and all the other industries. Bomb, then Halliburton rebuilds. Modernize the oil wells, then sell long term contracts to western oil companies. Install an Israel-friendly government with the felon Chalabi as prime minister. Allow descendants of 750,000 Jews who had been kicked out of the country in the early 1950's by Baathists to return for a visit, or even to live. Build 14 permanent bases for US troops, and move our troops from Kuwait where they weren't wanted. This was a win, win plan for the oil industry, the Iraqi exiles (Arab and Jew) and the Israeli government. Oh, I almost forgot--juniors' chance to show he could do something better than his dad.

It depends upon how it is "spread". You cannot successfully force any form of government or culture upon another country and have it last. The only way for democracy to spread to the Middle East is if countries there internally choose a democratic form of government. The inititative has to come from within, not without. No one and no country likes to be told what to do by an outsider. Bush is not setting a good example for Middle Eastern countries to want to follow. Their dictators torture prisoners and Bush's America either allows torture or we outsource it. Their dicatators throw people in jail with no right to trials or right to judicial intervention, and Bush just proudly signed the bill he wanted so he can be just like the dictators.

DID YOU NOT PAY ATTENTION IN SCHOOL? PEOPLE WANT DEMOCRACY! LEADERS OF TOTALITARIAN REGEIMS DO NOT WANT DEMOCRACY AND DO WHAT THEY CAN TO PREVENT THEIR PEOPLE FROM FINDING OUT ABOUT IT. ONCE PEOPLE ARE EXPOSED TO DEMOCRACY, THAT BELL CAN'T BE UNRUNG. IT WOULD BE THE DEATH KNELL FOR THE TYRANTS WHO LEAD THESE PEOPLE. SHEESH, I THOUGHT THAT THEY TAUGHT THIS STUFF IN 3RD GRADE.
