More violent. I don't want to sound like a wacko or anything, but... I think it's because there's an underlying realization that we may have to fight to defend ourselves from terrorists here on our own soil someday. It's almost like people are getting geared up.

as compared to when? violence against others in society has a LONG history, some of it much more violent than we currently experience. bottom line is any violence is too much.
