I think schools are more safe with new technology such as metal detectors and more security guards. However with that being said, it is the students who attend the schools that are becoming less safe and stable.

I'm afraid I disagree with previous answers. I think schools are much less safe now than in years past. The whole world is less safe, & even with modern security measures....which don't seem to be getting the job done, why should schools be any different that tne world-wide trend which is toward more violence and terrible crimes.
The percentage of violent crime has risen & I see it affecting the school systems every day.

They are definitely less safe because of the bad influences kids are exposed to today with drugs, sex, violence getting worse and worse. And these kids are getting bolder and bolder. But its not just with schools its everywhere, the world itself is getting worse and worse. In the past week or so there were news coverage of 3 school shootings all within a week. And not all were by kids. Its very tragic......Someone's feeling of hate getting so great that they take it out on innocent people because they no longer feel any compassion towards anyone or anything. How selfish.....

LESS SAFE than when I was a child.
We had no need for metal detectors, security guards; I never heard of a School shootings, attacks on teachers, gangs, violent bullying.
I think this is really sad that some young people today don't even know what it feels like not to have those things.
So, schools are certainly not safer than they used to be. Sad.

I think that schools are less safe than before because criminals are finding more ways to hurt children, one way or another. Also, the bad kids are the ones too for making school more dangerous.

Less safe! When I went to grammar school in the late 60's and junior and senior high in the 70's there were never any metal detectors, security or mass murder/suicides. And I grew up in not-so-good neighborhoods.
Even "good neighborhoods" have schools you are afraid to send your kids to!

I feel schools were safer back in the past. When I went to school the only thing I needed to worry about was getting "high". Now days children need to worry about weather or not they will live through the day.

My school is the unsafest place on earth . . Two 15 year old girls had a PHYSICAL fight, and when a teacher tried to stop them, the teacher got stabbed in her arm with a knife. . . I am dead serious . . . Well I live in South Africa so you can expect stuff like that . . . And it not uncommon for the police to do routine checks through the school with drug dogs - we all have to take the contents of our lockers and hold it against our bodies as the police inspect us. They also search us for weapons , and handguns are often found . . . Students also pepper spray each other in fights

Less When I was in school we never had anyone bringing in guns & things. The most we had were fights with one person against the other using their fists!

Less, because of society allowing children to be adults and adults having no choice but to have to accept it. There is some serious respect issues that have gotten way out of control. Scarey world we live in.
