There are valves in you r legs that shut and open that let fluids go back to the heart fomr the legs and there is also a lymph system.

Because the american diet is lousy we do not eat the nutrients we need to keep these vales being able to open and shut the way they should.

There are things you must eat and do to restore these things to the body.
Then there are many of the things others have spoken about.

I know the company that sells unique ( special and different things) that end poor circulation and water retension . They have things you eat to improve your diet and things you can rub on the legs to open up circulation. I do not know if I am allowed to speak about them on this forum. HOwever it if interested you can email me seperately and I can tellyou about them.
I can say this because of this company many hove found a new life and found out that certasin diseases we are not suppose dot overcome and get better from are no longer as hard to be healed of. answwwerman@yahoo.com

poor blood circulation or water retension by too much salt in the diet. See a doctor. In the meantime, elevate the legs above the heart. Lie on your back and prop your legs with a few pillows just so the fluid can drain back to the upper body and circulate. Long term, tension socks are wonders. But he should see a docytor and a therapist to ensure he is getting the proper tension fo rhis condition. Good luck.

ps. avoid crossing legs when sitting or scrossing at the feet when lying down. that too cuts off circulation.

Water retention usually causes lower appendage swelling. Cut down on the salt in his diet, drink less soda, take walks after meals. Also, take a doctor visit and see if his cholesterol or blood pressure has undergone a significant change recently. This may also be an early sign of adult diabetes.

It could be several things. It could be he could be eating too much salt, which causes water retention and causes legs to swell up, so tell him to cut out sodium as much as possible! Another thing could be lack of exercise, tell him to walk daily for a minimum of 20 minutes, that will get his circulation going, and another thing could be high blood pressure, but anyway, a doctor will always diagnose better than any amateur here on Yahoo Answers!

edema, aka swelling, is the result of a number of things going on in the body. As we age the veins in our legs become incompetent and as a result blood pools and the legs swell. Also, we are unable to metabolize salts as well so we retain salt which causes us to retain water, this increases volume and again, swelling in the lower extremeties is the result. And perhaps most importantly, the heart ages and doesn't pump as effectively as it did, this situation needs the attention of a doctor. Let me urge your father to see a doctor to assess the swelling and the reason or reasons for it.

Have you tried TED hose? You can get them from amedical supply store or your Dr.
Edema can be a serious issue your dad should speek with his health care professional too. TED hose are constricting garments that cause the water retention to cease. They work really good. They may seem too tight at frorst for your dad but that is how they are supposed to fit. Have someone show YOU and YOUR DAD how to put them on properly this is very important.

Your dad should go to the doctor.
When your legs start to swell(water retention) it usually means your heart is not working properly.

He could be diabetic and needs to be seen by a doctor. There could also be other medical reasons for this and they all need a doc's attention

Keep his feet raised above his heart and drink lots of water it will flush out toxins and lesson water retention.

Good Luck...see the doc
