Lots of different options for episodes so we don't have to watch the same stuff over and over again, as well as characters that are quirky.

I think we all like to see people making fools of themselves and being brought down a peg or two. Frasier, Only Fools and Horses, One Foot in the Grave, Fawlty Towers, Arrested Development, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Simpsons, Father Ted all have characters who muck things up even though they keep trying to do the right thing. Somehow it's a lot funnier than if everything turned out right all the time.

Original idea
Good script - good comic timing
Talented actors who have good comic timing
Not trying to be really "avant garde" or "outrageous" or controversial, just basically appealing to the things that tickle everyone's funnybone.

The writing, because lame jokes just aren't funny. No amount of good acting can overcome bad writing.

A quick crisp dialog that doesn't draw from stale or sexual jokes as their basis. And, believable characters - not characatures.
