Puritans, followers of John Calvin, believed that any and every answer to a question was found in the Bible. They therefore relied on the Bible as their sole source of authority. In the Age of Enlightenment, people believed that man was equipped by God with a brain, and that all that needed to be done was to reason to a solution of a problem. The Puritans also saw God as one who personally intervened into their lives. The Enlightenment people, however, viewed God like a watchmaker who makes a watch, winds it up, and sits back and watches it run. God, who has made the laws of nature, sits back and watches His creation run. Man is in control.
