It's an allegory about excess, the recording industry in California, etc

There's a good article on Snopes about all the crazy things people have thought it's about, and the real explanation.

A hotel on the central coast of California, its very old and said to be haunted.... its near Santa Barbara I want to say in Carmel but I can't remember for sure.... I heard them talking about it in an interview about 7 years ago while I was driving Hwy 1, headed to visit my parents. I remember thinking how close I lived to the place and that I should have visit it... never did because I was driving I didn't write down all the info, hopefully I helped at least a little.

Have a GREAT day!

Hotel California touched on many themes, including innocence (and the loss thereof), addiction to drugs, death, the dangers, temptations, and transient nature of fame, shallow relationships, divorce and loss of love, the end results of manifest destiny, and the "American Dream".
