I know that when people go hiking on the appalachian tral in the USA, they can mail themselves clean socks, more clothes etc. Then they pick them up at the local post office as they pass by. Do you think I could mail somethings to New Zealand, and do the same? That way I won't have to haul so much luggage.

Yes, lots of travellers do it until they have a permanent address. It is called Poste Restante. So for example if you are going to Christchurch, you would address the item:-
(Your Name)
Poste Restante
Christchurch, NZ (zip)

I thought this used to be a free service but I just checked the NZ Post website to confirm they still do it and looks like there is a small fee now. You should probably confirm that it is still okay to address it just as above too before sending. Here is there site:
