Keep it simple. Most kids do not like things jumping out at them.
Do things like "touch and feel" bowls of brains (noodles), eyeballs (peeled grapes) etc. Spooky sound tapes are always good.

Use famous characters from movies that have a haunted theme. Like maybe a standup of Jack Skelington from Nightmare Before Christmas, or the bride from Corpse Bride.
You might try re-creating Frankenstein's lab from Young Frankenstein as a humorous touch.
Or, if you can get away with it, try some elements from Disney's Haunted Mansion, which has really great music, especially Grim Grinning Ghosts.
www.doombuggies.com is a great website for stuff about the Mansion.

We had a great haunted house years ago and one of the favorites was a witch with a cauldron. We had some dry ice in there, so it made the white "smoke". The witch would reach into the cauldron and pull out gummy worms (stored safely in a ziploc bag, not in the dry ice) and make the kids eat them like little birds. It was hilarious and fun.

I LOVE HAUNTED HOUSES!!! ok.... for kids under 12 I would do a semi-dark room with lots of interactive stuff (a bowl with "brains" in it, grapes for "eyeballs".) I'd also give them a guide so they don't stop in the middle. For kids over 12, I'd give them almost totally dark room, maybe with an eerie glow, and have them walk through in a group of 4-6 kids. I'd have stuff popping out at them and maybe a guide to tell them a spooky story or something. Hope that helps. I WISH I COULD GO THROUGH YOUR HAUNTED HOUSE!!!!!!!!!

Tie fishing line around plastic snakes and have people (in black so they won't be seen) "move" the snakes as people walk by.
Light that room with only night lights and have the operators lay on the floor near the walls.
It will look like a room full of crawling snakes.
Do not use a real one - even if someone has a pet snake.
Someone could get scared and really kill it....

Put the cardboard box in your kids closet. Cover it in cat-nip and they'll turn his room into a haunted house.
