I just formatted a brand new Maxtor 200GB Hard Disk & tried to set up Windows 2000 Professional (Service Pack 4) onto it. During the setup process, the computer boots - but unfortunately what happens is that when it boots, the Windows logo appears on the screen & the progress bar goes upto 50% - but then it suddenly freezes & I have to reset it again to see the same problem occuring again :(

I've tried fixing the MBR, tried disconnecting several on-board accesories to try stripping the configuration down to a minimum; but of no avail :(

Anyone can tell what could be the issue here & recommend a solution for it?

Try an fdisk before you format the drive.

The other possibility is depending on the age of your computer, the system board may not be able to handle a hard drive as large as 200 gig. You might try creating a partition with only 100gig of the hard drive, install Windows, and then format the remainder as a second hard drive. Use the first to install and run programs and the second to store data.

Hello , the issue here is that you are formatting the HDD way too fast, as a result the clusters are not being written as they should, to correct this start you machine and go into system BIOS and into your CMOS, make sure that the clock speed is set to minimum, now , once you have done this try installing windows again, but instead of using NTFS format, use the FAT format instead, at which since you have such a large HDD, i will take quite some time, but once it has finished, windows should start normally, and when it does, go back to your CMOS setting and change the clock speed to where it was.

You don't need to by worried about your computer. Check if your computer is on Windows XP? and hopefully it should be on it so just install the XP driver for your scanner.

Try repartioning the drive. If that doesn't work, you probably have a scratched or dirty install CD. Try cleaning it with a soft cloth. If you can see a scratch you can get them repaired at a movie rental place.

Sounds to me like you have a hardware problem, possibly a failing power supply or memory. Have a professional check it out.

There is a possibility that your BIOS doesn't support Hard drives that big. If you put this drive in an older pc, chances are you will need to get your BIOS updated.
