I was in the same boat, with always a fruit fly showing up. I solved the problem by getting a trash can that had a tight lid I could raise with a foot pedal AND all my fruits - especially bananas, were not left out in the open air, but in a container or the refrigerator.
Before I would sometimes see them in the trash and spray them with Windex so they couldn't fly, and then quickly tie up the plastic bag, and take them out to the garbage.

What a great question. I've been dealing with a fruitfly invasion for the past week. I vacuum them. I do this also to bee's nest. It works. Those little flies multiply quickly though so you better get going. P.S. I didn't have a bunch of fruit laying around either.

First all the fruits in a sealed container or in the fridge. Get also a sealed garbage (with a foot pedal or something like it). Once you did that, try spraying Javex on the counter. Becareful if you have kids or animals.

Buy only enough fruit that you will eat in a day or two, for peelings and waste, first put it in a plastic grocery bag before putting it in the Garbage can- and spray if they do come.

don't they die on their own once you get rid of the food that they came from??? i know i heard like on bananas if you tie some tape on the stem of the bunch that you won't get any fruit flies that way.

Set out a small dish of vinegar. Maybe the apple cider kind. For some reason it attracts them and they'll drown in it.
