I always fall asleep in class unless I eat lots of candy or chocolate or drink a lot of caffeine, but i wanted to know if there's a way to stay awake without these.

-take deep breaths, providing your body with more oxygen
-pinch the skin between your thumb and pointer finger HARD
-smile
-take a big piece of paper and rip it up into tiny pieces
-ask if you can open a window(it is harder to stay awake in a warm classroom)
-remove one shoe only, which creates a temperature difference
-follow your professor’s argument intently, even if it’s confusing
-TALK (you don’t fall asleep talking usually, do you?)
-occasionally ask questions, if only to break the monotony of the professor’s voice
-change pens (use one with brighter ink)
-sit in the front of the class
-contribute to discussions
-and try to stay well-rested

Obiously, get more sleep at night, exercize and eat right, but I hear that apples are good for waking a person up in the morning. I mention apples because they are healthy and not like the junk food that you listed above (which I don't even consider "food").

You might want to experiment with some rejuvenating and invigorating herbal teas that are on the market these days. Such teas usually have no caffeine and yet, the tea is a warm drink and may help you get past that need for a "warm" drink like coffee.

You can try getting at least eight hours of sleep every night, and try to find a way to make the lesson interesting for you. I know some teachers can be really boring, but you just have to live through it I think. You can try dextro energy. I know it's food as well, but it really helps you focus. If you're used to eating a lot just to stay awake for a while, it can take a few weeks until your body is used to staying awake on its own. Maybe try eating just one sweet instead of the whole bag, it will help too. Thats all I can think of right now, I hope this helps a bit!

Hmmmm... you don't say how old you are...

if you are under 16, you need to get a LOT more sleep than someone over 16..

One way is to stand up in the back of the room.. talk to your teacher about moving in the room or standing to make sure it will not bother him/her...

exercise before class.. get your blood pumped up and moving around so you get lots of oxygen...

stop eating candy in the morning before classes.. sugar gives you temporary energy which lasts for about an hour or two and then you hit a slump and get sleepy.

you need to start eating breakfast not a bagel either try some fruit, eggs toast & applejuice or orange juice. it'll wake you up plus it's brain food.

bring a comic book or a book. put it in between your notebook and read. if the teacher aks you a question just say,

"can you come back to me on that, i'm still thinking of the answer."
