At 5 months old my son usually woke about 7 in the morning. I would feed him single grain rice cereal with formula, about a quarter of a cup, also about 3 ounces of formula in a bottle. at about 10 I would feed him a bottle. about 1:30-2:00 I would feed him a 1st foods jar of fruit, bananas, peaches, pears, or applesauce. by 5 he was ready for another bottle, about 5 ounces. I would give him a nice warm bath about 6:30 and lotion him up and feed him a cereal bottle,(about 4 ounces instead of 5 since it is thicker than just formula.) and put him to bed by 7. He would wake about 2 in the morning, I would give him a bottle and put him back to bed, and he would sleep till about 7. Routine and stability is what a baby needs to learn. The bath at the same time each day let my son know that it was about time to go to bed. 5 months old is still a little too young to let her cry, rock her in a dark quiet room. During the night, if her diaper is only wet...dont change her. Changing her means turning on a light, getting her partially undressed, wiping her with a cold wipe, and fumbling around to get her dressed again. By this time she is wide awake, and understandable does not want to go back to sleep or has a hard time doing so. Also, limit the amount that you talk to your baby when she wakes at night. Don't play with her or let her play with you while she is feeding at night, and put her straight back to bed after burping instead of sitting up and socializing. Also at 5 months old baby should not have to eat every time she wakes at night. Try just picking her up and rocking a bit without the bottle. Sometimes waking at night becomes a habit for babies. They wake up, they know you will jump up and poke a bottle in their mouths. Its habit, take away that contributing factor, and they will learn to go back to sleep when they wake at night. I hope that I have helped in some way. Good luck to you.

we are feeding my 5 month old granddaughter bananas, applesauce, plums, green beans, sweet potatoes, squash and all sorts of baby food with cereal. Make sure you only try one new thing for three days before adding something else. And we mix the new foods with cereal the first 2-3 times. That gives you time to watch for any possible food reaction. But once you have gone the three days, you can use that food anytime, and then try a new one too. She is eating cereal about 4 hours before bedtime, and then a bottle right before bed. She sleeps for 6-8 hours before waking up hungry. Is it possible your baby is getting chilly?

when you introduce a new food to your baby, don't do it at night, if it bothers their stomach...you'll be up all night!
try feeding her plain cereal before bed. During the day, approx 6 hrs before bedtime so that food has time to get out of sytems, try baby food.
To make the food gentler on the stomach, I mix my 6.5 mo daughters food with cereal. Step 1 maybe 1/3-1/2 of the bottle with about 4 tbsp cereal. She usually doesn't eat it all, but that's the proporitons.
next time she cries, you call also try just rubbing her back and soothing her. She may have woken up and got scared because you weren't there.
Good luck!

Hey new mom, this worked for me. if you don't want to give her cereal at night, give her a bottle in her sleep, (yes in her sleep) it will soothe her and feed her at the same time keeping her asleep, babies only wake up in the middle of the night because their hungry, but pay very close attention to her as she is feed. I did that and my daughter has been sleeping threw the night since she was 1 month old, yes one month, and she is now 2. your baby will then adapt to sleeping threw the whole night and soon you will not have to feed her at all in the middle of the night she'll sleep right on threw it. The best way to now when to feed her is when you notice her moving and getting uncomfortable. and make sure it is a warm bottle too, that will reall do the trick.

I use to feed mine baby oatmeal before bed. He would sleep all night after that. My doctor said not to, but I told him if he wanted to come feed my son every 2 hours, he was more than welcome to. (It was not the fact that I was up every 2 hours, it was the fact that he was drinking 8oz. every two hours or less.)If my doctor didn't want to do that, my son was getting cereal. My doctor never showed up, and my son slept all night on a full belly. Don't make the cereal too thick, I think that is where the problem comes in. My son is now 25 and there are still no side affects of giving him cereal before bed at 5 months old. Good luck.

Your child has most likely hit a growth spurt. Try giving cereal (start with an ounce, and increase to 2-3 if needed) just before bedtime. This will probably lengthen her stretch of sleep. The best way to get a baby back to sleep is not to stimulate them too much. Go into the room, give her dry pants and then put your baby back into her sleeping position and touch her back or tummy so she knows you are there. Don't talk to her or pick her back up. You have to help train her to put herself back to sleep. Make the touch last shorter lengths of time until she can put herself back to sleep. It takes some work, but is well worth the effort.

5 months is not too early to start feeding her the stuff from jars. If she eats it and enjoys it, why not? Sometimes they cry at night b/c their little tummies want more in them. If you feed her something a little more solid before she goes to bed, it could help her sleep better. I'd still give her the formula and cereal, too. Sometimes I'd mix the cereal with applesauce with a bit of formula. That always went over great with my son. Didn't hurt him, and he's five now!!

I would give the baby more bottles during the day and also try to keep her awake more during the daytime. My Grandson is 5 months old and he is not yet on any solids. He drinks 6-8 ounces of formula every 3-4 hours from 7AM to 10PM and he sleeps straight thru from 11PM to 7AM. I would say he drinks 6 bottles every day. I did find that if he is not wrapped tightly (swaddled) in his blanket he wakes up. I don't think that every time a baby wakes in the night it is because they are hungry.

you might want to fit another bottle in or put more in bottle or just introduce a jar your baby doesnt have to eat it all, but at least your baby will be getting enough then most probably start to sleep through

try it anyway. a little won't hurt. maybe she just needs you. don't worry about overfeeding her. she's 5 mos. old so if she doesnt' want it she won't eat. like i said earlier, different children develop at different rates and my son was on baby food at that age. no problems at all. it really depends on the child. doctors don't always listen to the parents.
