Biblically speaking, it goes back to a couple of half-brothers. The elder was the son of their father's concubine and the younger was the son of their father's wife. The legitimate son got the birthright. The elder son didn't feel it was right. Their descendants have been bitter enemies ever since.
They're fighter over the so-called "Holy" Land. (The way I look at it, that land is so polluted by blood and conflict, it needs to be burned, blessed and then burned again.)
