If you have 3 10-sided dice, number 0-9, what are the odds that two of them will land on the same number? All three of them? I'm in a situation that I can bet on these odds. It pays 2 to 1 for 2 of the same numbers and 4 to 1 for all three. Is this a good game to bet on?

I'm so disappointed in most of the respondents. Only thehiddenangle got the odds right.

Rolling the three dice, 28% of the time the dice come up with exactly two matching. There's a 1/10 change the first two match, and a if they don't (9/10 chance) there's a 2/10 chance that the third one matches one of the first two. 1/10+(9/10)*(2/10)=28/100.

And there's a 1% chance that all three match. There's a 1/10 chance that the second die matches the first, whatever it rolls and a 1/10 chance that the third one matches the first two. (1/10)*(1/10)=1/100.

If you played the game 100 times, you would expect on average to win 29 times, 28 times with the pairs and once with the trips. If you bet $1 on each roll, you would get $3 back on 28 rolls and $5 back on one roll. That means you would lose $100-(28*3+5*1) or $14.

That puts the house edge at 14%, which is really bad. You'd be way better off playing roulette (which has some of the worst odds in Vegas) where the house edge is only 5.3%

Youve got about a 5% chance of winning that bet on a good day with three dice. 10% with two die. So, lets take 10%.....

You bet $1, and lose 9 out of 10 tens. The tenth time, you win $2. So, youve spent $10, and made $2.

Is that a good bet?

10*10 100
10/100 1/10

10*10*10 1000
10/1000 1/100

For two dice, your chances are 10/100 or 1/10. As shown above, you have 100 total combinations, but only 10 are "pairs". Similarly, for three dice, your chances are 10/1000 or 1/100 (you now have 1000 total combinations, but still only 10 "pay-offs", which in this case are triplets). Short answer, your odds may be better than your average lottery but still aren't anything to write home about.

No, its not a good game to bet on. There are only 280 combinations with repeat digits so you'll only win 28% of the time. The payoff, however, requires you to win at least 33% of the time to breakeven. There is only a 1% chance you'll roll all 3, so at a paltry payoff of 4-1, that's hardly even a factor.

1/10 for two of them, 1/20 for all three of them. It is not favored for you to win, but if it is a game where you dont have to bet a lot of money to gain a lot of money, then it is a great game to bet on. Otherwise, you have terrible odds.

The odds are 2/30 and 3/30. it would be good if you are a beginner and have 'beginner's luck'! Who knows?
