Robert, I'm not sure, but it sounds like you are following siding instructions, that call for "off stud joints" The presumption being a piece of equipment to make these joints, when off stud joints are used to make the most of material at hand. They are to be placed random amongst the area being sided and not form a pattern. In which chaos presents it's own pattern, DUH! I would check with siding/building materials supply stores.
If you know the brand of siding you have it should be easy to track down who sells the supplies for it. Look under Siding Wholesalers or Suppliers in the phone book.
