I suggest that we as a society have our children in to many activities. See the results of the research study below. For a 6- year old, I suggest only 1 additional activity. That might be a hobby, sport or other organized event.
I strongly believe in the parents reading with the child. Reading is vital in the learning process.
Encourage the child to play and pretend. Limit the hours of and the type of television you child sees. Being a parent is ones most important role in life. You are a good parent to be asking this question.

I don't think classes are necessary, just have them do some chores with you around the house, and explain why you are doing them. This gives them knowledge and they learn to work with their hands. Also sit down and draw with them or do some simple projects. You don't need anything fancy. Just make sketches or make little greeting cards for each other, or reminder notepads with tape, glue, or colored paper. Read with them. Go outside to throw a ball around, or do some gardening. Dance and sing with them , so they are comfortable with that.

Scouts is a great suggestion. The main thing is to ask your child what he/she is interested in - sports, art, dance, music. Then go from there. And don't feel that once your child starts something, they *have* to finish it. It may take him/her a little while to figure out what his/her true interests are. So for some things, like music or dance lessons, ask if your child can try one class free to decide whether it's something he/she would enjoy.
Good luck! You are a great mom to be so involved in your child's education!
P.S. I'm assuming you're a mom - if you're a dad, my apologies!! ;)

They are not necessary...I never took any when I was growing up and I am just fine. If your child is already fairly busy, than it's probably not a good idea to add more things to do. You don't want your child to be overloaded and overwhelmed.

my mother made it a rule that i had to be on something...ANYTHING...other than school...and i am so happy that she did...i made a lot of friends...gave me confidence since i used to be very very shy...it helped be learn what i liked and didnt like (found out i didnt like martial arts and drama...found out i loved piano, writing, and boxing)...also i put some of the classes that i took after 16 on a resume if i really feel i learned something from it (if not than i tell the employer that i put it on to prove that i am dedicated and love to learn new things)..some of those instructors are more than happy to provide a reference for a job when you have no job experience...ps-i love working out at the gym now that i'm older thanks to the fact that i took boxing AND i dont need a personal trainer-everyone that sees more working out knows i've been doin it for a long time

I think they are. It is important for children to be with other children.
Have you tried Scouts or Guides?
