this was a socialist country... and i am a socialist.
labour and conservatives; the rich and the greedy stripping away services from the poor and the needy..
you give me a wall, and some ammunition cases, and i'll bring my own hammer.
hitler, socialist... come on, where did you get that from? facist maybe.. despot and dictator.. but never a socialist... nowhere in the socialist handbook does it say build gas chambers, nor does it advise segregation or guantanamo bay type terror camps.. socialism never picked on jews or blacks, its never gassed folk who dont agree with the party line... youd have got a better answer using joe stalin... he made hitler look like the one bollocked housepainter he was. socialism isnt communism, or facism..know the difference before opening your mouth...

It is indeed unfortunate that Socialism as a political ideal has not become more prevelent throughout the world, but there is a very good reason for this. Whilst its ideals serve as a leveler for the human race, by its very nature it stifles itself because it does not allow for a basic need in all humans - ambition! Or more accurately, greed!
In a socialist ideal everyone works together for the common good, but because everyone's intelligence and apptitude levels are different, it is inevitable that some members of society will contribute more to the socialist utopia than others, yet everyone will recieve the benefit of it. And humans today, just don't want or can't stand the thought of others benefitting from their hard work.
I'm no different. I work all the hours God sends, but I don't do it for the love of the job particularly (though I do enjoy it) and I definately don't do it because it gives me a fuzzy feeling inside that so many others will benefit from what I do. I put in the hours so I can achieve an above average life style for myself and my family and whilst that is just as achieveable in a socialist community, it relies on everyone thinking the same way about the same ideal and that's just not the way of the world.
For example, let's take an imaginary factory somewhere, making, oh I dunno - car parts lets say. Man A and Man B work on the assembly line, both productivity paid. A common enough scenario around the world.
One day Man B feels a bit under the weather and quite frankly can't be arsed, so he slows down. At the end of the day he finds that the work quota hasn't fallen by any sort of significant amount so he realises that Man A has been covering for him unknowingly. So he thinks - right I'll carry on going slow and see what happens. When Man B finds that his wages aren't significantly lower on pay day he decides to carry on at this less energetic pace and as soon as that happens - AND IT DOES HAPPEN, socialism breaks down, because IT DOES NOT ALLOW FOR GREED.
Unfortunately socialism is destined to forever remain a utopian dream, because people the world over, including self confessed socialists will always step on the other guy to achieve what they want.
I'm not saying that Conservatism and free trade is any more likely to succeed as a political way of life but at least it allows for the individual to aspire to what he wants to achieve for himself rather than constantly working for the common good.
Sad but True

They had a good one in the 1930's in Germany, - The National socialist party, I think there was a Mr A Hitler at it's helm.
We have a party in charge in the UK who as supposed to be socialist, if they really are, us "The Masses" will be looked after.

wonderful yet unrealistic idea.
pure anything doesn't work well for the majority.
capitalism and socialism mixed and monitored are the best.
look what happened in old USSR how Russia quickly turned to communism not a good idea.
some group wants all the power AND CAN TAKE IT will ruin it.
think Bush and Cheney.

Back in the 1950s in the UK we had REAL socialists.
People like Aneurin Bevan actually CARED about the fact that there are many working people who slogged their guts out day and night to provide for their families and still couldn't make ends meet. People who were sent to an early grave by unsanitary working conditions and inhumanely long hours and still suffered in poverty because they weren't given a fair wage for their work, or indeed given the opportunity to work themselves out of poverty.
In those days we still had the selfish medical care system America now has - where you had to PAY to receive medical care if you or your loved ones were sick. If you couldn't afford it to PAY for it, you (or your kids) went without the basic medical care that could ease your pain or save your life (civilised, eh?) Bevan brought in the NHS - to care for British people "From the cradle to the grave". Granted its not as great as it could be but at least I can see my GP or be treated medically anytime I need it without having to worry about how much it "costs" or whether we can afford it. Medical care is a human right not a luxury to be bought.
Also, in the pre 1950s days, a man who lost his job or became too sick/disabled to work was left with nothing - thrown on the mercy of various "charities" - many of whom were religious orientated and run by sanctimonious tossers who would decide if he and his children were "deserving" of their help. Bevan and his colleagues brought in the Welfare State, to provide housing and a basic income and help for those who had fallen badly down on their luck.
Again - these days it has been all corrupted to hell, with scroungers flocking to the UK from all over the world to take advantage of it, but the idea was good.
These days socialists don't have a clue. They'll spend forever whining about how unfair it is that we have a Royal Family while around them people are struggling to pay their mortgage, heat their homes and feed their kids and being evicted for debt - perhaps if they shut the hell up about stuff that doesn't matter and concentrated on getting a fair deal for the ordinary working man (as Bevan did) people might have faith in them again.
I stopped reading "Socialist Worker" when I realised they gave more column space to defending members of the IRA and other assorted scumbags (because they were anti-government, presumably) while ignoring the misery and poverty so many British working people find themselves in.
Until we get a REAL socialist party in this country I will have no faith whatsoever in them. Most of them are middle class comfortably-off tossers anyway who wouldn't know the first thing about suffering or poverty or being too poor to heat your house and feed your kids or pay your rent. Whinging about the Royal Family and the rights of "ethnic minorities" (while ignoring the rights of the people who have been living here for generations) is about all they can manage.
I also have to say that most opponents of socialism are not only incredibly selfish "I want my kids to have designer trainers blah blah" but they have this constant idea that everyone is lazy and trying to rip them off and profit from their hard work! Its complete crap!
Yeah your taxes muight go to a welfare state to support a man who breaks his back and is unable to work. Boo hoo. But what about when you break YOUR back and can't work? Don't be so ******* selfish people! You'll be glad of it when your job goes down the tube and everytihng ***** up for you. People DO become ill or lose their jobs through no fault of their own. And who picks up the pieces then? Insurance companies? Charities? Don't make me laugh!!!!!
