At the very end of last season, we found out that Lily wanted to try art school. She 'auditioned' and found out she got in to a fairly good place in San Fransisco. So she left, broke up with Marshall (because she hadn't experienced things 'alone'), and when she came back, Marshall had finally moved past her and wouldn't take her back.
But then they ended up having sex in the bathroom when they were at brunch with Ted's parents at the beginning of this season. So now things are weird.

Lilly wanted to go to somewhere, to do her art thing. Basically she broke up with Marshall. He was heartbroken, and Lilly later realized that it was a huge mistake. They had been dating for a long time and had gotten engaged. They were gona get married and were planning the wedding. they were the cutest couple. now it's just awkward between them.
