Could anyone answer my question? My lawn mower wont work, it will start but then it will just sit there sputtering and then quit. Ive noticed oil spitting from the muffler and when i removed the spark plug i noticed it all covered in oil. Could I have a busted ring? Why wont my mower run?

Could be bad rings or even a cracked block. First, make sure there is the proper amount of oil in the mower. sometimes if it is over filled you will see this problem, hope this is the case. If so drain the oil and put the proper amount in, for a few dollars you can replace the plug too.

There is another possiblility.
the lawnmower got turned on it's side or turned
upside down, oil will run backwards thru the crankcase ventilation tube and then run into the cylinder thru the carburetor.

Get a can of carburetor cleaner (spray) from autozone,
take out the sparkplug and spray out the cylinder the best you can, spray off the sparkplug too,.
let dry 5 minutes, and then try cranking it again.(reassemble first)

if the muffler is full of oil it will smoke badly for a while but eventually burn itself off.
also make sure there isn't too much oil in the engine to begin with.

Yes a piston ring has likely broken . They have at least 2 rings in a 4 stroke motor . First one is compression and the second is an oil ring . Now you know which one is broken . Is it worth fixing ? That's hard to say ,it depends how much you have invested in it .
Hope this helps .

Good point guys ... oil level

sounds like the mower wasn't stored flat. If you tip the mower too much to like change the blade or such oil will come out the muffler. wait a little bit and let it settle and then try again a little oil will come out but it should clear. If not that you need new piston rings.

These engines don't have 2 rings, they have 3...

Doesn't sound like the rings (although its not imposible)

Make sure the oil is not overfilled (or smells of gas)..., make sure the air filter is not covered in oil as well, replace it if it is paper..., ring it out if its foam.
If the oil smells like gas...., you have a carb problem (stuck float, leaky inlet needle and or inlet needle seat to a bad float)

If oil is spilling out you probably put too much oil in. That could also be causing your lawnmower to staul and sputter

You need a new mower FOOL!!!!

No but seriously just like car either its jumping cyliners (pistons) or its choking you should try taking it apart to clean any oil residue and excess dirt and try it again. You dont have to be an expert so dont be afraid to take it apart.
