Its a process that does not require an input of energy to occur. It can occur "by itself," hence the name spontaneous.

I think this is a better definition, more in line with what people normally will call spontaneous (like burning of a garbage dump without arson, or dust explosions because someone opened a door or dropped a tool at the wrong place or wrong time):

A spontaneous process occurs because of internal forces; no external forces are required to keep the process going, although external forces may be required to get the process started.

A process that will occur without any energy input from the surroundings. A process that will occur on its own hence 'spontaneous'.

a spontaneous process means it occurs naturally and no external variables be imposed......... it does not mean that these reactions are fast. they maya lso be very slow....... example is that of rusting of iron..... spontaneous but slow
