I tend to agree with you, though I think that usually what is 'ego' falls in the realm of psychology rather than either metaphysics or materialism.

Of course, there are nay-sayers who suggest that the ego is simply a mental construct with no actual physical existance whatsoever. These are people who are looking at only one side of the coin. If you take a probe and try and point to something that is ONLY ego and nothing else, then yes, you are absolutely going to have trouble doing so. And ego-prober would probably conclude that the ego is in the domain of metaphysics, if it even exists at all.

The other side of the coin is to measure what the ego includes, not what it excludes. If you ask people who they are, or observe what they identify as 'self', you will find that the ego extends well beyond even the mere brain. For most people, it includes their whole body, much of their environment, and a certain accompaniment of objects. Consider: when a person is in a car accident, he doesn't say, "that car hit my car"... he says, "he hit ME".

Going further, I think an examination of ego is a very elucidating one much of the time. Some people define themselves even by the universe they are in, while others are so mind-oriented that even their own bodies would seem irrelevant in the picture. The variation of importance and membership is fascinating!

What? The ego is NOT metaphysical (and certainly not materialism) and it has no flesh. Are you sure you aren't smoking something weird over there? What are you talking about?

Ego is a mind process that will dictate ones character if the mind is weak.
