I have heard talk that my company is creating a new position for Sub-contracting. I have ideas that I want to present to the Sr. VP but I have a director above me and a VP above him. This position is in another area. Should I run my ideas by my boss and his boss even though they will not be responsible for this new position or do I by-pass them? Any thought on this?

NO! Don't tell your ideas to anyone! They may turn into "their ideas" and one of them will get the job instead of you!
Write down your ideas and submit them to the Sr. VP directly. Arrange an appointment to discuss your ideas with the Sr. VP and bring them with you to the discussion. Then and only then, bring up your ideas to Sr. VP. If Sr. VP happens to keep your idea sheet, make sure that you have made a copy for yourself for your own protection, signed and dated by you. You can't trust anyone these days with ideas!

I would let my boss know that I was lobbying for the position, then go ahead and speak with whoever is responsible for the new spot, in this case the Sr. VP.
I recently applied for a different job within the company I work for, and got the position. I just let my most immediate supervisor know what I was doing, that I saw it as an opportunity to move up within the company, and that I would be happy to help train someone else for my job if I were hired. We are still friends, and I got my job. Everybody wins. Just be honest.

PS. I too agree with the answer about not sharing the actual ideas with anyone else. That kind of stuff is to be doled out in small doses at the interview, and used to prove you deserve the position once you get it. You need to have that "ace in the hole"

It is always a good thing to talk to your immediate supervisor about career moves within the company. He/she may become your biggest advocate. It will also help his/her career by showing his/her superiors that he has promotable people working for him/her. He/she can also give you insightful suggestions on the personalities of any possible future bosses as well as suggestions on the best way to promote your talents. It will also give him time to think about your replacement when you do get that promotion.

I would approach him this way. Start by telling him how much you like your job, enjoy working for him and that you feel that you have a good future with this company. Ask him for advice on the best way to move ahead. Tell him that you know of other opportunities within the company and ask how he would go about being considered for them if he were in your shoes.

P.S. - I disagree with the above answers about going to HR first... You don't want your boss to be surprised or feel "side swiped" when HR tells him that you want to leave... This could very much hurt your chances of promotion.

P.P.S. - I agree with the response below about not telling anyone about your ideas.... Work on how to get the interview first then when it gets to the point where you have an interview with the final decision maker then you can discuss your ideas.
