My friends and I have an ongoing argument/running joke on whether or not constipation could be considered an emotion. If you could provide sources to back up your answer, that would most likely earn you your points. We need to know for sure for an improvisation game we play.

If one were to say they feel constipated then you could take it to be a nuanced variation on frustration, blocked from a course of action or desire.

Perhaps not an emotion, per say, but constipation can be caused by emotional distress, and in turn, being constipated can cause emotional distress, so it's at least closely linked.

It's a symptom, not an emotion.

It's a physical manifestation of a pathological state of the body. And in my experience with constipated patients, emotions related to or displayed by them include: exasperation, anger, frustration, sadness. I think because constipation can be a powerful trigger of a release of emotional expression, it can be mistaken for an emotion itself.

I would say yes, it could be called an emotion.

One of the secondary definitions of constipation is:

to make immobile, inactive, or dull : STULTIFY
There are numerous lists of emotions, and I have not seen constipated on them.

But it seems quite logical that the above definition could be used to refer to emotions - such as numbed or dull, which are listed on many emotions lists.

I highly doubt it...since no one seem to say "I feel so constipated" to suggest an emotion. However, I can easily see that someone could use that phrase to suggest that they feel like they are constipated with emotions to suggest that they keep all their troubles, anger, and sadness inside rather then let them out.

However, I haven't seen anybody do this yet...at least in the West Coast.

hope this helps

Not an emotion in and of itself, just as having a cold is not an emotion. But the state of being constipated INSPIRES certain emotions - anger, frustration, and finally the satisfaction of relief!

Constipated may not be an emotion, but it leads to many emotions. Like anger, frustration, despair.

Why don't you just look it up in the dictionary? Constipation is not an emotion.
