go to start>run>type msconfig and go to the startup tab and uncheck any of the processes you know you dont need. especially things like qttask (quicktime) and adobe quickstart and stuff like that. they dont need to run all the time, just when you use the applications. anti-virus leave running though.

1-make another partition on your computer by some software like partition magic, and use one drive for only installing your Oprating System( Win-xp, Win 98 ...) and use other driver for your saving files
2- try to not install games and not necesarly application on your computer
3- use Disk defragmenter from system tools menu in accessories part on all program from start, every week or 2 weeks once

go all programs/control panel (look in the top left hand corner if it says classic view you are fine) if not and it says category view click it.
Now you press performance and maintenance/ rearrange items on your hard disk to make the programs run faster. then last press defrag,

After this it takes along time to do it but it will help allot

I agree with Paladin25...that's all you need to do and also go and get a antispy ware. Ad-aware is really good and it is free.
