It's an amino acid that is formed in the brain. It can be found in high protein foods such as meats, beans, fish, and dairy. It's used mostly for bodybuilding (including muscle cramps and pain) and gastrointestinal health.

I've never heard of glutamine for achy joints, but I have heard of glucosamine and chondroitin for achy joints. They come from shark and cow cartilage. Also found on the outside coverings of shellfish.

Feed a high quality food for large breed dogs, make sure it has glucosamine and chondriotin for hips and joints. Also I have three large working dogs and I give them something from petsmart called the Missing Link, it's a powder that supplies them with the nutrients they miss in dry food.
