I always thought "bi-weekly" meant every two weeks and "bi-monthly" meant every other month. My co-worker insists that "bi-weekly" mean two times a week and "bi-monthly" means two times a month. Who is correct?

According to Merriam-Webster (the dictionary guys) the definitions of the two are...
biweekly: 1. occurring twice a week and 2. occurring every two weeks
bimonthly: 1. occurring every two months and 2. occurring twice a month
So the answer would be both of you.

In working in the service industry Bi weekly means every other week & bi-monthly means every two months!! Hope this helps

Tell your co-worker to go work for a place that pays "bi-weekly" and he/she will quickly learn that in the REAL world, the paycheck only comes every other week!!

In payrolls, where this comes up often, biweekly is every two weeks - 26 paydays a year. Bimonthly is twice per month (generally the 15th of the month and the last day of the month), for 24 paydays a year.

You are correct. Semi-weekly would be twice a week and semi-monthly would be twice a month. "Bi" is the prefix for two and "semi" the prefix for half.

bi = two
semi = half
biweekly = every two weeks
bimonthly = every two months
semimonthly = twice a month
Okay, so the dictionary says both of you, because bimonthly can be also semimonthly, but I always use semimonthly when I mean semimonthly, it helps remove the ambiguity.
