Assuming I understand you correctly, I'd highly suggest you check out Terry Pratchett's work. In particular, pick up a copy of "Good Omens" by Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

And never, ever stand underneath an airborne whale.

Well let's see... how Douglas Admas didn't write...

Shakespeare
Robert Louis Stevenson
Beatrix Potter
Rob Thomas
Carol O'Connell
Danielle Steel
Stephen King

On the other hand, if you LIKE Douglas Adams and want a readalike, try

Christopher Moore
Terry Pratchett
Robert Aspirin
Piers Anthony

I've always found a great similarity between Adams' style and Terry Pratchett's (even if the context was very different).

In fact, I only started reading Terry Pratchett (whose work I love) following a recommendation from someone who said I'd enjoy it because I loved Hitchhiker's.
