I think it's genetic. Promiscuous people pass on more genes than monogomous people on average so it's genetically fit to be a promiscuous man. It doesn't have any obvious advantage for the female of the species except for cunning women who can get a rich old husband and have plenty of toyboy fit genes fun on the side.
