So if I'm on salary, I have to work extra hours and does not get paid for it but if i miss a day or two of work then my check will be reduced b/c of the hours id idn't work? So it is possible for me to work 8 hours and not extra hours and stay on salary? because it doesn't seem fair to me that i have to work extra hours and don't get overtime. What about when i work less hours because i'm on salary?

Depending on what state you live in, there is a law that protects you from insufficient pay when you are salaried. For example, if you are salaried, you won't receive overtime but your check should reflect more than a 40 hour week (to compensate blindly for overtime hours you might work). If you miss four or fewer hours, your pay should not be tagged or your vacation time. Of course, this is something you should check with your company and state guidelines. The link below is specifically for California labor laws.

Yes, you would be docked pay for missing a day or more, if you don't have a means of covering it (i.e. vacation, personal, sick leave).

Every place is a bit different, but where I last worked on salary, we were given some flex time, with the expectation that we would be putting in extra hours when asked and when necessary. So if you needed to be gone for an appointment or something that was half a day or less, you could go and not get docked or reported.

Those extra hours come along with the salaried positions. Some companies do make an effort not to overload/overwork their salaried people - however, many will take as much as you will give.

Wah wah. Did you not understand the meaning of "salary" when you took the job? Salary means you get paid a flat rate to do your job and ALL of the job WHENEVER it requires. If you miss a "day or two" of work it should be covered under your sick days and/or vacation.

Same rules apply if you work less... they don't take the money away from you. If you don't like it, I'd suggest getting a different job.

and there is always the little matter of a contract being too restrictive, even if u have signed it it cannot be enforced because it is blatantly unfair if u do not recieve overtime coz u on a salary then they cannot dock ure wages coz of lateness ect id suggest you take ure contract to an advice bureau

haha...i just answered this question

it really depends on the company...sometimes they will make you sign an agreement when you are hired that states you will work the amount of hours that are designated at the time of employment or they have the right to not pay you for hours not worked.
