My Inspiron (SP?) will not turn on or if t does it freezes within a minute. I called Dell they said I need a new memory chip. Does this make sense? I already ordered the chip and am hoping that fixes it. When I try to power up the PC the lights do come on but only for a second, unless I am lucky enough for it to power up completley. I have read where it could be the motherboard. What could be the problem? Thanks

If it was the power supply how would I replace that? Thanks

If the memory is bad you should hear a series of beeps to inform you there is a problem. First thing I would check is to make sure all your cards are inserted fully. They can creep out of there connector and give the same symptoms you are having. Also, make sure the CPU fan is turning. If its not, your computer can quickly over heat and shut down.
What are the P.O.S.T. errors during boot? Can you boot to dos?
Check your Bios settings too.

Could be memory. Could be motherboard. Could be something else entirely. The memory is the cheapest thing to replace, so I'd definitely try that first.
