Lord of the Rings! It's classic! If you look at the actual story, it's got the better elements. C'mon, now, like "Oh, Luke, Leia's your sister! and Darth's your Dad" was just a bit too contrived and hokey. The only person he wasn't related to was Chewbacca.
LOTR, however, had all these wonderful characters and just had a better mythology to it.
It also helps that I didn't have to spend half my lifetime to see the story as it's pieced together with duct tape.

keep in mind that the trilogy "Lord of the Rings" by Tolkein was written in a time when reading a book was the only form of entertainment. Therefore the character development was far richer and the plot line could be more intricate. In Star Wars, the movie was made before the book (one of the only times that is the case). I'm sure Lucas has read LOTR and applied some of its principle to his saga. Yes, the SW saga has been piece mealed together but its still a great adventure. My nod though would have to go to LOTR as a book because it was the original. Movie- Star Wars. All the new ILM stuff goes into the owners movie first (George Lucas).

Star Wars, any day of the week. Star Wars captures the archetypes of hero, villians and the damsel in distress (although the damsel in distress turns into a princess that can kick some tail). I mean, it had a great story line that is very true to the older hero stories.
The original trilogy told us a great story, but the prequels showed how the original trilogy came to be. Masterpieces.

if you mean the new star wars movies, then lord of the rings has them beat by a galaxy. old star wars movies are better, though. maybe if return of the king hadn't been such a disappointment, that wouldn't be true, but you gotta bring something pretty awesome to the table if you're trying to top empire strikes back.
