Does anyone know what it takes for a woman to get sterilized? Is there a certain age they have to reach before doctors will perform that surgery? Is just saying that they don't want to have kids enough of a reason, or do doctors need more reason? I'm just curious! Thanks!

Female sterilization is called tubal ligation:
A tubal ligation is a simple operation to block off the fallopian tubes that lead from the ovaries to the womb and thereby prevent a woman from getting pregnant. The fallopian tubes are like two long, straight pieces of macaroni that let the sperm reach the egg and fertilize it, and then provide a passage for the fertilized egg to go back to the womb and grow into a baby.

People commonly refer to this operation as having your tubes tied, but the tubes are not tied in a knot. In some types of tubal ligation, sutures are tied round the tube to pinch it off and this is likely why the operation has become to be known as “having your tubes tied”.
You need to discuss the surgery with your doctor/health care provider. There is not a certain age, but you need to consider it non-reversible, because it can't always be undone. You need to ask your doctor I am sure there are doctors who consider not wanting to have children a reason for wanting the surgery.

that mom may think she knows everything but she is way off here. you certainly dont get your ovaries removed for sterilization. there are different methods of sterilization. most commonly the fallopian tubes are disrupted in one way or another- the actual procedure doesnt really matter-cut, burn, clips, bands...all pretty much the same as far as effectiveness and risk of pregnancy afterwards. usually done through laparoscopic surgery or in a small incision below belly button in women who have just given birth. there is a new procedure called essure where a camera is placed in uterus and particles placed into fallopian tubes to block them. you need to be of legal age to consent to this procedure. some doctors do not like to do it on young women with small families as the regret rate can be very high and it is irreversible. so if you are 21 with 1 or 2 kids it may be difficult but you will probably be able to find someone willing to do it. when you ask a question like this, you should give your age and number of children if you really want us to be helpful

A lot depends on your doctor and your state. Some docs will sterilize at very young ages even if you have no children, others docs won't.
I know that isn't a definitive answer but that is how it is.

"Sterilization" is an awful word, usually used to refer to an involuntary procedure that includes removal of the ovaries. The Nazis "sterilized" women in medical experiments; some mentally retarded or mentally ill women were "sterilized" to prevent them from getting pregnant in the days before mental illnesses were properly understood. If what you are referring to is voluntarily choosing to have a surgical procedure to prevent pregnancy, that usually involves cutting and tying off the woman's Fallopian tubes, to prevent eggs from leaving the ovaries . Doctors are very hesitant to do this in young women who have never had children, because it is not easily reversible, and if the woman changes her mind about having children, she may be out of luck.

Histerectomy--removing the uterus-- is the usual way to sterilize a woman. Insurance has more rules that doctors do, so check with both. .
