Ok I need to know whether or not the system restore works by it self, like saves a restore point. And if so can you tell me how i would be able to acess it, like move it. And how long can system restore point stay if you put them in manually. Is it possible that i can save my files to a external hard drive then restore and then put the files from the external hard drive in to the computer.

im not sure i understand your whole question but as far as putting your files on a external HD then moving them back to the pc. yes you can do this. however dont confused by moving files verses programs. you can not take the icon for a program off the computer then bring it back and expect it to work. files this can be done with programs will have to be reinstalled. what you can do is back up the files for the program then when you reinstall it import the files back to the program. with the restore point you cant move a restore point but if you want to see if you have one set or if you want to set one click start-help and support-then in the category of pick a task the 3rd line down undo changes to your computer with system restore. click that then the rest should be self explanatory. good luck

If you are referring to the system restore CD that came with the system, it either is a bootable CD or works in conjunction with a bootable floppy that puts the drive back to factory load. You WILL lose everything. If you are referring to a restore point to essentially "go back" a put the windows help file is an excellent source and will walk you through the entire process.

Simple, save the image of your hard drive to the external USB hard drive.
Keep in mind that sometimes a restore can be got from spy-bot, a virus rescue disk, etc
Yes XP's System Restore works--but---
If the hard drive is bad or goes bad especillay in a laptop the restore on XP will not work

System restore does not work itself. When your computer booting up, it will have a prompt if you want to restore. Press the key to restore it. You need to tell the computer where to insert recovery point. It is best if you put all the files on a cd or flash drive. And, moreover once you restore it, you will lose all the prog. which you installed yourself. You will need to install them again
