The whole purpose of outlawing drugs is to keep people from taking them but yet they do it anyway. Can we ever stop people from taking drugs? Should we de-criminalize drugs and clear out some jail space for higher crimes and save billions of dollars? And in the process take the big money element away from crime lords? Perhaps concentrate our efforts even more on prevention? What is the outcome of the "war on drugs"?

The "war" on drugs is a moral "we know better" attitude that comes from those with a nanny state mentality on the left or right.

In my view all drugs should be legalized, regulated and taxed. Drop the war crap and prison stuff, the revenues developed from the taxation of said drugs could be put in the general fund and also used for funding treatment programs.

I think we'd see institutional prison populations cut in 1/2 by doing so.

I don't think the government can ever fully stop people from doing drugs. There's no way they would be able to monitor every single drug dealer and user. I don't think we should de-criminalize drugs though. Some of these drug criminals are extremely dangerous if leashed out onto society so they are better off locked up...no matter what the cost. I think that the "War On Drugs" is great in theory, but I think it's a losing battle. If people aren't supposed to do something, they're sometimes more enticed to do it anyway. I think society will always have to deal with drugs.

I agree regularly that it rather is a burden on the taxpayers to maintain human beings in detention center for the reason that they had some grams of marijuana, yet fairly some the drug lords in detention center rather are recommend and efficient, they by ability of how have a fashion of having drugs interior each and every now and then much less complicated than exterior, so letting those human beings interior the device helps them to establish yet another drug commerce and subsequently the punishment will become moot. i do no longer think of you are able to provide up human beings from doing something they like to because of the fact there has been prostitutes because of the fact the commencing up of time and there'll constantly be as long as there are johns keen to pay the fee. that's an identical with drugs. vast funds became taken from unlawful alcohol commerce with the legalization of alcohol and liquor administration boards have been commonly used i do no longer understand why they might't do an identical with drugs, i'm no longer conversing approximately tricky drugs like meth or crack, yet they have mistakenly blanketed and misled the final inhabitants into bying into the actuality that all and sundry drugs are undesirable, properly alcohol and nicotine are 2 of the main addictive drugs on the industry and that they are criminal. What hypocrisy.

It's the illegality of drugs that makes them as dangerous as they are. When's the last time you ever heard of someone getting killed over a six-pack of beer? The fact that drugs are illegal in this country makes them highly profitable for the seller and extremely expensive to the user. So, drug dealers shoot each other to make more money and drug addicts lie, cheat and steal to afford their habit. Both of these things would cease to be if drugs were made legal. We might have more addicts, but we would have fewer people's lives destroyed as a result of drugs.

Switzerland was a wonderful bucolic and crime-free place until they decriminalized drugs and prostitution in 1999, now the Swiss government is contemplating going back because there has been such an influx of criminal activity and illegal immigration Switzerland has completely changed. It definitely lowered the standard of living there

We should legalize marijuana but with hard drugs I just can't support that. Maybe lighter sentences for users, it sure would save billions that is spent to incarcerate users not to mention all the money wasted on the "war on drugs".

Tabboo is an apeal with today's society. Does anyone remember turning 21 (or whatever the legal drinking age of your time was), you were so happy you could "legaly" buy alcohol, but after time drinking loses its coolness or appeal. If some things were legalized the drug usage would go down.

The market for illegal drugs is too large for law enforcement to stop it. It's time that we realize that it should be OK for someone to pollute their body with any substance they wish, as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others (impaired driving, etc.) Prevention is key.

Legalization and taxation and prevention and treatment would be more effective than what we have now. It would save and make billions of dollars.
