I have been a waiter at many high class establishments and have found that African-americans tip less on a percentage basis but I have also noticed that they will buy the most expensive things on the menu. I guess that they save enough money to go out on the weekend and have some surf and turf but only bring out enough to cover the check and about 10% for the server. I always make sure to give them exceptional service just to make sure that it is not me. The proper tip for any server/bartender is 20% not 15% or less. Another thing you could say is that they make less money than the average white person and just can't afford to give what they do not have. By the way, I am a white jewish guy

I think that is just what they expect, I always tip and like you it is never less than 5 dollars, the biggest tip ever that me and couple of my friends left was 28 dollars, and the waiter was white. He got that tip because he did his job great and he was very friendly, he didn't act like he didn't want to be bothered with us. I do really think that some servers need to look at how they behave while they are working.

Because they are ignorant of the fact that published reports by Forbes, Time Magazine, Wall Street Journal and other Pulitzer winning periodicals and magazines that calculate worth have indicated that African Americana's are a driving force in the economy and more like to leave a generous tip to combat this stereotypes than other races.

simply put...its prejudices. some of them judge us soon as we walk in the door..I was once a waitress, and if a group of minorities came in, i would see my other coworkers would debate over who had to take the table.
but as i tried to tell them...what they fail to realize, is that is a self-fulfilling prophesy. if you assume they wont tip well- you give poor service...which, in turn, will result in you getting a horrible tip! so the race has nothing to do with it.

First of all, thank you for your generosity. It's people like you who make the job worth it! :) They are stereotyping out of personal experience. I have waited tables, and have recieved great tips from people of all colors, just as I have received poor tips from people of all colors. In the end, poor tippers are poor tippers, regardless of color.
