Umm, I'll take a stab at cracking this old wive's tale:
"THE REASON U NEVER HOLD A NEWBORN WHEN ON YOUR CYCLE IS BECAUSE IT STRAINS THEM THE BLOOD FLOW IN YOUR BODY IS SO MUCH STRONGER IS HAS SUCH A GREAT PULL AND WHEN U HOLD THE CHILD CLOSE TO U ITS THROW THERE BLOOD FLOW OFF AND IT WILL MAKE THEM CONSTIPATED VERY BADLY ITS NOT A FLOKS TALE ITS THE TRUTH."
First, menstruation is shedding the lining of the uterus, and not actual "blood flow". If greater blood flow could somehow "throw off" a baby's blood flow...presumably by some sort of preposterous gravitational mechanism, by the sounds of the above explanation...then anyone who
1) larger than the baby
2) had blood flowing in their veins
would cause the baby to be constipated. Now, if that were the case we wouldn't all be complaining about those poopy diapers, would we?

I've heard of that old wives' tale, but let's look at this sensibly. How the HELL would a new mother hold HER baby if that were the case?? Do women NOT have a period while their babies are little?? I think not. Hell, women bleed non-stop for about 3 weeks after they give birth. Does THAT count?
Tell your friend to get a grip on reality.

well I guess it depends on the environment that you are in if it is family having a drink with dinner than you maybe over reacting. If it is a bunch of people at party maybe you should take your baby home or to bed. If it is a bunch of strangers at a family thing and you don't want to hurt their feelings just call it a night. I hope this helps a little and congrats on your new baby. Remember it is your baby and you will do the right thing that suits you and your baby. good luck and god bless Well if it your mom inlaw you may want to explain to her when she is sober so you don't make her really pissy but heck it is your baby and if you don't feel safe with her holding your baby than you have every right to tell her how you feel she will wake up to realty at some point.

I have also heard that, I was told by my ex's family that the baby would sense the personal smell and bond with the other woman! I believe it is ludacris! They are puerto rican and I believe that the myth is an old Lating tale, I find many people of Latin heritage believe it? In any event, I have 7 kids and 2 stepchildren, My sister and many friends all held my children(assumingly while they were on their period, since they were around everyday) and it never affected my children in any way. It's gotta be a myth.

People just repeat what they heard..kinda like what I am about to write. From a doctor though. Lol Basically, nothing happens the blood stuff draining is weird. However,if mommy is a cranky broad on her cycle. The baby definitely picks up on that and can become moody , fussy. That it is.. But I feel that's common knowledge.

OK... that is news to me. I have four kids and never heard that before. Not to mention when she get out of the hospital she could bleed up to six weeks. SO don't know what she is thinking but not true.

To hold the baby while menstruating would cause the baby strain. Here is the old wives tale website http://www.gardenplum.com/wivestales/

That probably came from Biblical times when a women was considered unclean while she menstruated, and was not allowed even to go anywhere or do anything.
