Anyone with even a dialup Internet connection can talk to others using VOIP for free. There is loads of free messenger software that lets you do this.

So, why do people pay for it? Have they been brainwashed by advertising, or are they just ignorant?

Why pay? Here's why.

So they can use a regular telephone, and be connected directly with other regular telephones.

Get additional services.... whatever they might be.

because dial up sucks......because the delay even with high speed connections are slow when you use the messenger programs to make phone calls. Perhaps some of us like a real telephone instead of a head set!
