Modem is (28 kbps, 48 kbps, 56 kbps, and 150 kbps) <- extinct
DSL .. is (784kbps , 1.5 mbps , 3 mbps)<- current
Cable .. is currently giving High speed ..(4,6,8 MBPS ) <- most preferred (new )
Watch out for FiOS by Verizon (5,15,30,50MBPS) <- next gen
the KBPS = kilo bits per second
mbps = mega bits per second
with 4 mbps , you can theoretically download a 4MB file in 1 second

The real question is what service is better for you. Everything depends on how much you use the internet and for what purpose. From a pure performance perspective Cable is by far the winner with speeds typically in the 2-4 mega bit range but can be more costly than DSL and high speed dial-up. If you already have cable television then you can most likely get a discount on your service (Comcast goes from $54 for standalone cable internet to around $46 if you have cable tv, even less if you have both tv and digital phone service). DSL can be had for typically around $30/month however you would need to use your phone line, I do not have a phone line in my home (we all use cell's) so the addition of a phone line would drive the DSL price above the Comcast price, you also have to add filters between your phone and the phone jack so that you can talk on the phone and use the internet at the same time (something which can be a pain for wall mounted phones).
If you only use the internet for occasional browsing and emailing, I would get high speed dial-up. However this option would not be good if you have multiple computers that will be accessing the internet.
If you frequently browse the internet and/or have multiple computers that you would like to access the internet at the same time, then I would recommend DSL.
If you constantly have people connected to the internet, play video games across the internet, and/or do heavy downloading then cable is your best bet.

Cable High Speed Internet Service is faster and usually higher in price - $50-55. DSL High Speed Internet Service is a little slower than Cable but is also a little cheaper - $30-45. DSL Starter Plans are usually a mid range speed of DSL which means they are much faster than regular Dial-up for around the same price but they are much slower than the High Speed DSL. If you can't afford the higher price of regular DSL or the best speeds (other than Fiber Optics) of Cable then the DSL Starter Plan is a great deal if your phone number and address qualifies.

DSL and Cable can be very similar in performance. You will want to know what speed you are getting before chosing. A slow speed DSL is not going to be much faster than dial-up. Check both the upload and download speeds to compare.
I like cable because I hate doing business with any phone company if I can avoid it.

I've had DSL for quite a while, and I'm happy with it. Cable is a bit faster, but networking isn't quite as secure as everyone on a cable leg is essentially on the same network. High-speed dial-up isn't really fast as the way they achieve their speed is to reduce resolution on images, only downloading the full image when it's selected, and other means by which they reduce traffic. Downloading a binary file will still take just as long as regular dial-up which is limited to 65KB of bandwidht.

I like cable better because it tends not to lag as much. The question to ask is, what goes down more, your cable TV or your phone line? High speed dial up is garbage.

Cable is faster but more expensive. It depends on how much money you want to spend.
